In 8th grade ELA, we build upon the exploration of identity and society in 7th grade, with a deeper emphasis on critically analyzing societal structures and forms of injustice through the narratives of marginalized and underrepresented voices. Students read and evaluate texts that enable them to examine a variety of historical and contemporary issues, and grapple with how groups and individuals seek to challenge the status quo when social action is needed. Our book list and supplemental readings deal with identity awareness, intersectionality, power, privilege, and protest, and our assessments build students’ capacities to grow as critical thinkers, close readers, creative and argumentative writers, debaters, and public speakers.
