Humanities 6 is a study of ancient world history from early humans to the 1400s CE. As we explore the ancient world, our class will encounter a ton of amazing cultures, brilliant people, clever examples of human ingenuity, and heartbreaking experiences of human cruelty. But, we’ll always be focused on answering one question: "How does the culture of a group of people develop to meet the needs of its people?" While answering that question, we will be making many connections between the experiences of ancient people and your life today! Along the way, we’ll hone our reading and writing skills in tandem with all the great work done in ELA class. Additionally, we will examine how the way history gets told can impact how people are viewed and treated in the present. Our goal is to build empathy for others by understanding history from more than just one point of view.
Grading: At our school, we only grade summative assessments. In Humanities, these assessments include quizzes, projects, formal discussions, larger writing assignments, and skill checks. All of our classwork and homework is like practice that gets you prepared for a sporting event or big performance. Just like a coach or instructor expects you to attend all your practices and do the work to feel prepared, we expect you to do your classwork and homework to prepare you for graded assessments.
Re-taking Assessments: The good news is it's ok if you make a mistake or don’t do as well as you hoped on our graded work. You are able to retake, edit, or apply feedback on your work to make it better and improve your grade. We want to build an environment where it feels ok to make mistakes, learn from them and then improve without you having to worry about what number your grade is. If you are willing to improve your work when you get feedback from us, you will have a good grade this year!
If you are absent, you have the number of days you were absent to finish your homework. It is the student's responsibility to get absent work.
Note: Most 6th grade teachers do not hold regular drop-in office hours. Families and students are encouraged to email teachers directly to schedule a time for additional support.
