Project Ideas

Faculty: These are suggested ideas that can be adapted depending on the class, learning outcomes, and audience.

Light Community Engagement Projects (Good for short projects)

• Create a short informational video about the Community Partner's mission and work 

• Research an issue and provide a report to the Community Partner

• Write an opinion piece about an issue of Partner's work

• Interview a Community Partner and deliver a speech about the Partner's work

• Research a local social issue, present their findings, and make a call to action via:

  • • Blog post 

    • 5-10 minute speech

    • Short video

      • Example: Community-Designed Anti-Stigma HIV Campaigns

    • A social media campaign

• Create an art project (poem, song, video, painting, multi-media) about an issue that directly impacts them

  • • Example:  Emtithal "Emi" Mahmoud Ted Talk

• Invite a Community Partner to speak with the class about advocacy and write a reflection paper

Intense Community Engagement (Good for semester-long projects)

• Create a documentary with a Community Partner about their mission

• Research an issue impacting a Community Partner and provide a policy brief to the organization

• Plan an awareness event for the campus or Treasure Valley Community

• Create a public awareness campaign

  • Example: University of Maryland students advocate for SNAP bill (coming)

  • Write an article for the Community Partner’s newsletter or blog

• Write a letter to stakeholders about a community issue

  • • Example: Sample Letter to Alumni

• Develop a social media campaign for a Community Partner or about a social issue to raise awareness and call people to action

  • • Example: Celebrate Pride

• Conduct a social action campaign to change policy

  • • Example: SJSU living wage campaign twitter post, letters to the editor, and video

• Research a community issue and make a public service announcement 

  • • Example: The Public Good Projects: Campaign to promote the consumption of vegetables in Central Louisiana

• Craftivism
