Things to Keep in Mind to be Ethical

Students: As you partner with Community Partners for your project, keep in mind these tips to ensure you are creating an ethical project that does no harm.

  1. Ask yourself if your project is breaking stereotypes or enhancing them. Often, our best intentions end up doing harm. When shedding light on an issue, make sure you are presenting a picture that does not strengthen stereotypes about certain groups.

  2. If you're getting footage, quotes, or photos from a Community Partner, make sure you have consent from everyone to use their image and words.

  3. Think about your role as the storyteller. How do you benefit from capturing these stories? What can you do to be more ethical in how you tell these stories?

  4. Learn about the community and/or issue you will create a project around. Don't be uninformed in your claims.
