5th Grade Band
Ms. Lisser, Mr. Linko, Mr. Tuite
Class Description
5th grade band meets every day during first period. We will go through a methodical process of learning how to play an instrument as a beginner. We will also learn how to function as good teammates in a 100+ person ensemble. The end goal of this experience will be our two concert performances.
Grades
Band is graded using the O,S,U scale. Students will be graded on the following:
*Daily attendance and “having your stuff” - 3 points per day
*Monthly practice records - 30 points per month
*Playing tests - 50 points per grading period
*Concert performances (MANDATORY) - 300 points per concert
*Extra credit - Can be earned through private lessons, attending concerts, or going above and beyond with practice time.
Materials Needed for Class
Students will need to have their instrument, book, music, band folder, name tag, and a pencil every day. In addition, woodwind students are responsible for bringing their own reeds, reed guards, swabs, etc. Brass players are responsible for having their own valve oil, cleaning cloths, etc. Percussion is responsible for having sticks, and mallets in a stick bag. All students should have their names clearly marked on their materials.
Important Dates and Events
Fundraisers: Candy bar sale will start January 14th and run for two weeks. A second fundraiser may take place in April, or May if needed.
*Winter Concert (MANDATORY) - Tuesday, January 13th, 2026; 7:00 PM in High School Auditorium
*Spring Concert (MANDATORY) - Tuesday, April 30th, 2026; 7:00 PM in High School Auditorium
Private Lessons
Private lessons are required for students in the percussion section. They are highly recommended for all other sections. With the exception of percussion, there are private teachers available to teach students in pull out sessions during the band period. This can be arranged between parents and private teachers. Private lesson prices may vary. A list of approved private teachers is available on the BCIS website.
Communication
We will communicate primarily through final forms. Communications will be sent to both student and parent email addresses. You may receive an occasional Remind message when an important due date or event is approaching.
