Materials needed for band
The following list of items can be found at local music stores.
All students: You must have a band instrument.
Woodwind and brass instruments can be rented-to-own with no interest from a local music store for $20-$35 a month, depending on the instrument. Quality used instruments in this category may range in price from $250-$700
Rental of a school instrument is $32 per year. Note: low brass, french horn, and oboe students should plan for this. All other instruments should try to get an instrument from another source.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that all students, weather using a school instrument or personal instrument, are using a brand new mouthpiece. Mouthpieces are available in plastic at local music stores. They are cheaper, more durable and easier to clean. Approx. $20-$32
All students: Band book. Provided by the school
All students: Cleaning kit, Approx. $15
For woodwind instruments; flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone
Flute: Thumbport Approx. $15
Clarinet and Saxophone: Reeds. 2.5 strength. Rico brand or comparable. Approx. $18 per box of 10
A box of ten should last for half of a year, but beware that beginners sometimes go through reeds quickly as they learn to put them on the instrument and manipulate them.
Reeds will last longer if you buy a reed guard. Approx. $9
Oboe, double reed: Should be arranged through private teacher
For brass instruments; trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba
trumpet, euphonium, tuba: Valve oil. Approx. $5
French horn: rotary oil, Approx. $7
Trombones: "Slide o Mix." Approx. $10
Valve oil and slide cream should last most of the school year if used properly.
Percussion (drum) students will need a snare drum/practice pad, a bell kit, sticks, mallets, and a stick bag. Student's will leave the pad and bell kit at home. They will bring their sticks and mallets back and forth to school in the stick bag. Local music stores such as music and arts in Canfield will have packages put together for Boardman beginners for around $250.00. They can also work with your budget to make sure that you have everything that you need.
