Rhythms Using Rests

Rests

In Music, when you see a note, you are supposed to make some sort of noise. A rest is the opposite. Instead of making a noise, you are SILENT for the duration of the rest.

These rests are quarter rests.

These are the rests we will see most often in music class. They take the place of quarter notes. Instead of making a noise, you would be silent. If you were counting this rhythm, you wouldn't say anything. It would be a good idea to say the numbers silently in your head to keep your place in the music, though.

These are 8th rests:

These rests take the place of eighth notes. We won't see these as often in music class, but it is important to know that if you do see one, instead of making a noise or counting them out loud, they are silent.

These are 16th rests:

These rests take the place of 16th notes. We may not see any of these in music class. You treat them just like any other rest, though. Instead of making noise, you would be silent for a 16th rest.
