Rhythms in Song Maker

How Rhythms Work in Song Maker

Step-by-Step Song Maker Rhythm

On this page, we are going to learn how Song Maker handles rhythm. When you open Song Maker, this is what you see:

If we wrote this as music, it would look like this:

That is because there is nothing playing in song maker. So the music is only rests because it is silent. The important thing to see here is that it is 4 bars (measures) long. The bars in song maker alternate between white and gray. I have labeled the bars in this picture:

Just like the music, Song Maker also has 4 beats per bar. In the music you can see the beats represented by the rests. Song Maker separates the beats within the bars with a thick vertical line. I have labeled the beats in this picture:

To make a rest in song maker, all you need to do is leave the dot blank. No clicking.

If I want to make Song Maker play notes, I have to click something. I'm going to start with quarter notes. Below is 4 bars of quarter notes.

To put this into Song Maker, I would click on the FIRST dot in each beat. The first dot in each beat is slightly bigger than the second one.

When you finish, it should look like this:

If you are wondering why I clicked the TOP dots and turned them into TRIANGLES, that is because of how you read music for DRUM SET. If the note heads are in the 3rd space from the bottom, that tells you to play the SNARE drum. In Song Maker, the snare drum is represented by the top dots that turn into triangles when you click them.

If I wanted you to click the BOTTOM dots and turn them into CIRCLES, I would make the music look like this:

When you read music for drum set, the BASS DRUM is represented by the bottom space. Since all of the note heads are in the bottom space here, my Song Maker for this music would look like this:

This is because the BOTTOM row of dots in Song Maker represent the BASS DRUM.

If you wanted to write music that uses both BASS DRUM and SNARE DRUM, you could write something like this:

And click the dots to make your Song Maker look like this:

Now we need to learn about the smaller dots, the second ones in each beat. Those dots are for when your music has 8th notes.

Here is what 4 bars of 8th notes looks like, with the count written below:

I left off the last "&" - oops!

I have written the count where each note goes in this picture of Song Maker:

If you put the music into Song Maker, it will look like this:

Remember, the reason that they are all triangles is that all of the 8th notes are on the 3rd space of the music, so they are supposed to be Snare Drums (represented by the top dots that turn into triangles). If I wanted to hear a bass drum sound and click the bottom dots to turn them into circles, I would need to write the music with the note heads in the bottom space.

HOW TO DO ONE STEP-BY-STEP

Step-by-Step Song Maker Rhythm

So I'm going to do one that uses all of the different notes and rests. To make it simple, I'll do the same rhythm in each bar. Here is the music:

Since all 4 bars are exactly the same, I only really need to do the first bar. Once I have that one, it is just a matter of copying the pattern in the 1st bar to the other 3.

The 1st beat of the rhythm is a quarter note in the bottom space. That means that in Song Maker I click the first dot (the big one) on the bottom row of the first beat of the first bar. It should look like this:

The 2nd beat of the rhythm is a set of 8th notes in the third space. That means that in Song Maker I click both dots on the top row of the 2nd beat of the 1st bar to turn them into triangles. It should look like this:

The 3rd beat of the rhythm is a rest. That means that the 3rd beat should be left blank. I'm not going to click anything in the 3rd beat. Since I didn't change anything, I'm not going to put a picture here. It would be the same as the one above.

The 4th beat of the rhythm is a quarter note in the third space. That means that in Song Maker I click the big dot (the first one) on the top row of the 4th beat of the 1st bar. It should look like this:

Notice I also labeled the rest. Just wanted to make sure you understand that you leave the whole beat empty when there is a rest.

Now the first bar is complete. Since all 4 bars are exactly the same, all I need to do is copy the pattern from the first bar in Song Maker to the other 3 bars. When I finish, it should look like this:

Here are the basic rules for doing rhythms in Song Maker.

1 - It is important to keep track of where you are in the music. If your note is in the first beat in your music, it should go in the 1st beat in song maker. If it is in the 3rd beat of the music, it should go in the 3rd beat in song maker.

2 - If you are doing a quarter note, it only goes on the 1st dot of the beat (that is the bigger one)

3 - If you are doing 8th notes, you fill in BOTH dots of the beat (the big one and the little one)

4 - If you are doing a quarter rest, you leave both dots of the beat empty.

5 - If a note is in the bottom space, you will click the bottom row of dots to turn it into a circle, which represents a bass drum.

6 - If a note is on the 3rd space, you will click the top row of dots to turn it into a triangle, which represents a snare drum.
