Song Maker Melodies

Melodies in Song Maker are handled similar to Rhythms, it is just a little more complicated because there are more options to choose from.

Song Maker has 2 drum sounds it can make, Snare & Bass, so you only have 2 possibilities for how each note of a Rhythm will sound. If a piece of music has notes on the 3rd space, like this:

You click the top row of dots for each note to turn them into a triangle to make a snare drum sound, like this:

If a piece of music has notes on the bottom space, like this:

You click the bottom row of dots for each note to turn them into a circle to make a bass drum sound, like this:

Melodies in Song Maker follow the same concept, but there are many more different pitches in Song Maker than there are drum sounds.

Each pitch in song maker is color coded, like this:

To figure out which color to use for each pitch of your melody, look at which line or space each of the note heads is on. If you can't remember which is which, here is a picture with the lines and spaces labeled:

So, if you see a note that looks like this:

Step 1 is to figure out what the pitch of the note is. This note is on the 3rd line, so it is a B.

Step 2 is to figure out which color the pitch is in Song Maker. B's are pink, so you would pick a rectangle in the song maker grid that turns pink when you click it, like this:

If you need a more help with how to read pitch, there are more resources at this web page: Reading Pitch/Melody

As an example, I am going to program the first part of the melody of Mary Had a Little Lamb into Song Maker. Here is what the music looks like:

Mary had a Little Lamb

When I put all of the pitches in the correct places, my finished product for the 1st 4 bars looks like this:

Hopefully, you notice that the general shape of the melody in Song Maker is basically the same as it is in the written music.
