As middle school counselors, we notice that certain problems or issues tend to reoccur more frequently than others. Because of this, we have developed a series of tips that we offer both to students and parents that we hope will help you resolve some of these problems together. Middle School students typically want to do things on their own, but they also need guidance from the adults in their lives. Here are some suggested strategies for a few common middle school issues.
Organization Does your child frequently forget about homework assignments? Does he/she have trouble finding papers?
Encourage your child to follow these simple steps to better organization:
Use an assignment book to write down all assignments and tests. Take your assignment book home and check it every night.
Have a folder for each subject and a homework folder. All loose papers should go into the homework folder until they are handed in, tossed or filed in the appropriate folder.
Make “to do” lists.
Tape your schedule on the inside of your locker and by your study area at home.
Pack your school books, homework, gym clothes, etc. the night before school so they are ready to go in the morning.
