Improving Grades

As middle school counselors, we notice that certain problems or issues tend to reoccur more frequently than others. Because of this, we have developed a series of tips that we offer both to students and parents that we hope will help you resolve some of these problems together. Middle School students typically want to do things on their own, but they also need guidance from the adults in their lives. Here are some suggested strategies for a few common middle school issues.

Improving Grades Would your child like to increase his/her grades on progress reports or report cards?

Encourage your child to do all of the following:

  1. Use an agenda or calendar and always complete and turn in homework on time.

  2. Use folders to keep organized.

  3. Prepare for tests a few days in advance.

  4. Participate in class as much as possible—being an active participant in class makes the material more interesting and easier to learn.

  5. Keep track of your grades so you know where you need to improve.

  6. Always let your teacher know if you are struggling to understand something—ask for help when you need it!

Always feel free to ask your child’s teachers, principals or school counselors for additional suggestions!
