Literacy

Reading to and with our preschoolers is both fun and important work. Read-alouds can help children learn new ideas and new vocabulary. Reading together is a way of sharing and building conversations. We hope you’ll use the preschool literacy pages to enjoy listening to stories and reading aloud with your children. We are also providing resources to empower families to think about how we choose books and how, through conversations and activities, we extend books beyond the page.

Also be sure to check out Unite For Literacy - a site that has books read in many different languages. Check out our online resources page for more info.

Look for new videos weekly from our librarian, Ping Fahn!

Teacher Ping misses seeing our students - please feel free to send her an email to say hello, or request a story

We are so enthusiastic about Unite for Literacy because it offers you lots of choices!

    • Choice of how slow or fast you read/listen to the book. You are in charge of when to turn the page.

Here’s a quick guide for making these choices.

    • A choice of text written in English or Spanish.

Use the pencil icon to choose the written language

    • A choice of 22 languages to hear the book read by native speakers.

Select the globe icon to see the list of possible languages. If you do not

select a second language the book will be read in English.

    • A collection of books will appear on your screen that are available in the language you selected.

    • Choose the book you want by selecting the cover.

    • Choose to hear English or another language by selecting the horn symbol under the book. You need to select this on each page.

    • Turn the page by selecting the white arrow on the side of the book.

    • When you're ready for a different book, or a different language, select the word "Return" at the top of the webpage
