Weeks of March 15th and 22nd, 2021
Dear Berkeley CDC community,
Hope you are well and healthy. We are starting a new topic for the next two weeks: Knowing about our emotions and our brain keeps us healthy. We will learn about the parts of our brain that help us think, make kind decisions and also the part of the brain that holds all our big emotions! Enjoy!!
Weeks 25 and 26 Theme OUR EMOTIONS AND OUR BRAIN
IDEAS TO TRY Watch our video where we talk about the model created by Daniel Siegel called The Brain in the Palm of the Hand. It is important to remember that when we have big emotions our middle brain and amygdala take over and we are not able to use our prefrontal cortex to make good decisions to calm down. Trying to problem solve when we are having big emotions is not possible therefore it is important to wait until our “Thinking Brain” is once again engaged and then we can think of good solutions to whatever conflict we may have had. The video also includes a new song we wrote to use while Tapping (check it out!)
(We are putting both English and Spanish links in the same playlist, so you can watch whichever ones are best suited for your needs)

We are starting a new topic for the next two weeks: Showing kindness to others keeps us healthy. We know that when we show empathy that is something that helps us feel better and in turn helps our emotional healthy. You will see our friend Manu the turtle show some of her feelings and we show her love and kindness. Enjoy!!
WEEKS 23 AND 24 THEME SHOWING KINDNESS TO OTHERS KEEPS US HEALTHY - SER AMABLES CON LOS DEMÁS NOS MANTIENE SALUDABLES

Talk about feelings and notice how others may be feeling. Also talk about the importance of not judging what others may be feeling and instead show kindness, love and empathy. You can learn the song we sing in the video about sending love to those around you regardless of how they are feeling.
We are putting both English and Spanish links in the same playlist, so you can watch which are best for your needs. We are also including 4 songs you can dance or play along to that have the theme of kindness and feelings.
Enjoy and have a wonderful week and enjoy showing kindness and empathy to those around you!

Review Belly breath, snake breath, and flower breath. Try bee breath (cover both ears and hum as you let your breath out), bubble breath and straw breath. These new breaths we went over in our live zoom Friday class. Also make up your own with the help of students. Remember it is best to breath in through your nose, not through your mouth.

WEEK 8 THEME
WATER IS THE BEST CHOICE FOR OUR BODY. INFUSED WATER IS A HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE TO SWEETENED BEVERAGES AND SODA.
IDEAS TO TRY
Try making your own infused water adding Fruits, Vegetables or Herbs to water. Remember no sugar needed (Yeah!) Talk about the amount of sugar that we find in soda and other sugar sweetened beverages, and that when we take out all the liquid in these we would find a lot of sugar. Mention that these drinks are more like treats (like candy or cake) that are not healthy to have every day. Reinforce that water is the best and healthiest choice for our body and that infused water with fruits, vegetables or herbs is a healthy alternative to soda or sweetened beverages.

Healthy Me Video
Dear Berkeley CDC Community,
In the midst of all of the uncertainty we are experiencing these days, we want to give you and the kids in your lives the gift of music. We are thrilled to announce the launch of our EP (mini-album) Sabroso under our band name Healthy Me Saludable Soy. We recorded three original songs (Healthy Me/Saludable Soy, I Drink Water/Tomo Agua and Breathe/Respiro), each in Spanish and English. They are now available on YouTube, Amazon, iTunes, Spotify, and other digital platforms. This is our dream come true!
These songs are inspired by the remarkable children in our classes and the incredibly strong and talented teachers who help them grow and thrive. We are truly grateful to all of our friends, students, colleagues, families, administrators, musicians, and funders who have supported us in developing our program and recording our music.
We wrote the Healthy Me Saludable Soy songs and sing on all of the tracks. The music was produced by amazing Venezuelan multi-instrumentalist, educator, producer, and composer Jackeline Rago who also played guitar, percussion, and Venezuelan cuatro on the tracks. The wonderful Donna Viscuso played flute and fabulous Bill Hagar played bass. Recorded with engineer master Jeremy Goody at Megasonic Sound Music Studio. This EP was funded by In Dulci Jubilo, Inc. and the Oakland Sugar-Sweetened Beverage tax.
The Healthy Me Saludable Soy songs come from a bilingual health and nutrition program through music and movement that we created and teach called Healthy Me Kids: Saludable Soy (www.healthymekids.com). The program is a multisensory experience designed for young children that focuses on health topics such as nutrition, the importance of drinking water, fitness, hygiene, and social-emotional skills. It is currently being implemented in California with children ages 6 months to 5-years-old in Berkeley, Albany, and Oakland in partnership with YMCA of the East Bay/Head Start. The funding in these three cities comes from the Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Taxes (Soda tax). The program is also being implemented at four Richmond sites in partnership with Bread & Roses Presents.
Go to our website to sign up for our newsletter. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram. We will be posting updates sporadically.
Please share this email with other teachers and students who have participated in our program so they have access to the music.
Wishing you health, love, and resilience,
