Rosa Sat, So Ruby Could Walk, So Kamala Could Run
Teacher Karen celebrates our new Vice President, Kamala Harris and discusses how Rosa Parks and Ruby Bridges led the way, and then sings a beautiful song (see lyrics below).
It is with great sadness we share news that our long-time BUSD preschool teacher Guadalupe Mora passed away on October 15, 2020.
Teacher Lupe, as her students and families lovingly called her, began her career as an Early Childhood Education teacher in 1977. She came to BUSD in 2000, beginning in the Pre-K Bilingual Program and then moving to the Full Day General Education program soon after. She worked at Franklin, King and Hopkins and built strong working relationships with her colleagues.
Teacher Lupe is remembered by all of BUSD staff as a kind, talented and dedicated teacher who loved her students and worked hard to make a difference in their lives. She will be missed for her warm smile, her helpfulness to others, the delicious cookies in her classroom, and the happiness and laughter she brought to so many around her.

Our goal is to provide high quality, comprehensive preschool Distance Learning education for all BUSD preschool children and their families.
PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY DURING DISTANCE LEARNING
The Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) Early Childhood Education Department will continue to provide remote opportunities that nurture young children’s physical, cognitive, social and emotional development, as well as develop kindergarten school readiness skills, empower families and respect the cultural and linguistic diversity and unique characteristics of our families.
Our curriculum and instruction are aligned with the California State Preschool Foundations. The standards ensure that our students are prepared for Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten. The standards focus on addressing the needs of the whole child and building on the students' individual strengths and contributions in the classroom. As we work under these circumstances we will continue to meet this goal with our Distance Learning focus on our preschoolers.
Please take the time to see activities and suggestions in each subject area which are aligned with the Preschool Foundations during this time of Distance Learning. What we are recommending in each area represents the work you would see at our preschools on a typical day as children work individually, in small groups, and in whole groups. On a weekly basis, you will find new activities/lessons that involve a variety of learning models. For example, students learn number sense by reciting chants, counting the stairs while going up and down the stairs at home, setting the table for a meal at home - activities that are directly connected to the child's own experiences.
