Dear FHUHS student,
Congratulations! You are hereby invited to submit a candidate form for consideration for membership in the Matthew Lyon Chapter of the National Honor Society. Your overall average of 3.5 or better since entering high school has made you eligible to complete a form. However, simply having the necessary average does not guarantee membership. You must also demonstrate that you have shown scholarship, leadership, school and community service, and good character through your actions and activities thus far in your high school career.
The National Honor Society is a national organization. It is separate from the school’s designation of honor students at graduation time. You do not have to be an NHS member to graduate with honors from FHUHS. The guidance department designates the honor students and distributes the golden cords that are worn at graduation.
You do not have to submit a candidate form to the National Honor Society if you do not so desire. This letter is simply an invitation to do so. If you do not feel that you have enough accomplishments to demonstrate scholarship, leadership, service and character at this time, you can try to focus on those things and apply next year (if you are a junior at the moment and maintain your current average).
If you do choose to submit a form, remember that everyone who submits a form has a 3.5 or above GPA. Therefore, your form needs to make you stand out from the rest of the crowd. In order for your candidate form to be considered you must write an essay about yourself. Don’t be afraid to “toot your own horn” in the essay. This is probably the most important part of the form. Obviously, it should be free of spelling and grammatical errors. There is no required length; you should simply write whatever you think will give the Faculty Council an accurate picture of who you are and why you deserve to be a member of the National Honor Society. Keep in mind the fact that the members of the council may not know you or your accomplishments. If you leave any activities or accomplishments out of your form/essay, they will obviously not be able to consider them during the decision process.
There are some other things to keep in mind if you choose to submit a candidate form. The form should be typed or filled out in ink (please print) – not in pencil. If you wish to type your form, or you need more space, you can make your own copy on a computer as long as you faithfully recreate everything that is on the original form. In the “Service Activities” section, you need to have an adult who knows that you participated in the activities you list sign your application where it says, “supervising adult’s signature.” This could be an adviser of a group in which you performed community service or an elderly neighbor who you voluntarily (i.e. without pay) helped in some way. Remember, service does not just have to be in school or related to a school club or group. Community service could be through outside organizations such as the Boy or Girl Scouts, 4-H, your church, or simply helping others in some way.
If you have any questions about the process, please see me as soon as possible. Your completed candidate form (including essay) is due no later than Friday, April 12, 2019. You can give it directly to me or put it in my mailbox. Please do not staple your form, as I will need to make copies of it. Instead, please use a paper or binder clip or put your completed form in an envelope or folder.
Sincerely,
Michael W. Bruce
