The Studio Habits of Mind were developed by Lois Hetland and a team of art educators & researchers at Project Zero, Harvard Graduate School of Education. 3 books were written based on this research and subsequent research. Studio Thinking, Studio Thinking 2, and Studio Thinking from the Start.
The Acton Boxborough Visual Art Department believes that holistic learning in and through the arts stems from these eight studio habits:
Develop Craft: Student practices and applies artistic techniques using selected tools and materials.
Engage and Persist: Student understands that artmaking involves problem-solving, practice, and perseverance.
Envision: Student visualizes and plans as part of their artmaking.
Express: Student creates artwork that convey ideas, feelings, and personal meanings.
Observe: Student looks at the world around them and considers aesthetic possibilities and ideas.
Reflect: Student contemplates and articulates ideas about their artmaking and the artmaking of others.
Stretch and Explore: Student experiments, takes risks, and explore ideas in their artmaking.
Understand Art World: Student learns about art history and current art practices, and shares their artwork with the broader community.
