After-School Writing Lab (ASWL)
ASWL takes place four days a week, Monday through Thursday, from 3:30 to 6:30pm throughout the school year. Volunteer tutors assist 1st through 8th graders with daily writing exercises, homework, and reading. Students also sharpen their creative writing skills during each session and each semester their writing is published in a bilingual chapbook and celebrated by the 826CHI community.
Because of the tutoring schedule and volume of students, we ask volunteers to commit to as many consecutive weeks as possible throughout a semester. Establishing a sense of consistency is also important when working with our students, and another reason we ask for a more long term commitment.
Prospective tutors must shadow an experienced volunteer for a session for a shift. To sign up for a shadow date or if you have any questions, please contact the Program Team, at programs@826chi.org.
**During the 2020-2021 school year this programming was held in a virtual setting, however, for the fall of 2021, programming is expected to return in person!
