Reading: The Daily 5 is a structure that helps students develops the daily habits of reading, writing, and working independently that will lead to a lifetime of literacy independence. The Daily 5 is made up of 5 components, they are; Read to Self, Work on Writing, Listen to Reading, read to someone and Word Work. We will have three 15-18 min. sessions where students will be practicing these five areas. During this time students will also spend time in small group learning.
4j English Language Arts program: Students will be engaged in 2 programs. Fundations which covers phonics and the how to read and spell. Whit and Wisdom focuses on reading comprehension, grammar and writing. Geodes allows for small group learning and leveled curriculum. Topics in 2nd grade include: Seasons, , Civil Rights Heros, and Good Eating Habits. We will also fit in some of my personal curriculum; polar unit, poetry and mystery books.
Spelling: The Fundations word study program incorporates spelling practice.
Science: Students will be engaged in the 4j district's Foss Curriculum and mystery science. The units of study for fall is earth science of rocks, pebbles and silt. Winter term will be solids and liquids. Spring will be life science.
Social Studies: Students will be engaged in mini lessons about their world. We will also go over voting and native american studies.
Health: Students will have access to The Great Body Shop:
identifying special qualities in self and others.
Respecting and having empathy for self and others.
How family changes affect feelings.
Coping with fear.
Real dangers.
Helping others.
Communicating.
Avoiding risky situations.
