The Salmon Spot

4J/EWEB Education Partnership (4J/EEP) andODFW's Fish Eggs to Fry Classroom Salmon Raising Experience

Welcome to SY 23/24! The phenomenal 4J/EWEB Education Partnership (4J/EEP) and ODFW's Fish Eggs to Fry classroom salmon raising experience.

This FREE learning opportunity runs from late October through December. Participating teachers are encouraged to dive deep into teaching about the phenomenal keystone species, Chinook Salmon while connecting this experience to their grade level NGSS standards/science kits, as well as social studies through the Tribal History, Shared History lessons.

History:

Each fall, salmon education in the classroom is 4J/EEP's most popular program with both students and teachers. Students have the opportunity to raise salmon in the classroom and benefit from having a live phenomena to question and wonder about for a prolonged period of time. This allows students to deepen their understanding of the keystone species-Chinook Salmon and their importance on our planet.

Any Eugene 4J teacher can choose to participate in this exciting fall project free of charge. We supply all of the equipment, provide training to help you set up and maintain your tank, provide ready to go lessons and how-to materials, as well as provide online resources-see below.

In addition, 4J elementary teachers who raise salmon also have the opportunity to take their classes on a Salmon Watch field trip in October and November, typically to Fish Creek, near Lake Creek Falls. Trip dates are limited and there are some requirements in order to qualify for these popular trips.

Up to 60 participating teachers/teams will receive:

-Tank supplies and chiller

-100 chinook salmon eggs delivered to your classroom tank in late October

-A salmon education resource menu

-Optional, classroom visit from 4J/EEP

-Salmon release trip at local waterway in December

Special Requirements & Considerations:

While we primarily focus our curriculum on 3rd and 4th grade classrooms, activities and resources can be typically be adapted to your grade levels.

Note: If you are new to salmon education, double check with your building mates about "the usual" grade level that participates in this opportunity.

Information to sign up for the program is sent out via email to all 4J elementary teachers each year in early September.  If you are a 4J teacher and would like to participate or want more information, and/or would like to access the virtual materials for fall, email Tana Shepard at shepard_t@4j.lane.edu
