An important update of the workshop is proposed from September 2023 ("🍩 Donut" update). It concerns the workshop's facilitation support of 2tonnes France and the 2tonnes World, its pedagogy and mainly aims to better take into account all the issues of the transition while retaining its "climate" focus.
This page aims to enable the skills development of the entire community: switching from the old to the new support or discovering the support for a first animation.
This content will remain available in the resources area and will gradually be integrated into the “standard” training course.
Major developments:
The other issues of the transition (and Donut theory): General approach and new debrief of rounds 2, 4, 6 Â and 7
Removal of “Orders of magnitude” slides
2035: Mid-term point
New general debrief of the workshop
Addition of a key message in conclusion (systemic vision)
Graphic redesign
Minor developments:
Quiz: global warming
Quiz: the 2 tonnes
Rules (simplified version)
Debrief round 3: Transport emission factors
Debrief round 3: Suggestion of influence
Storytelling round 6: High Council for the Climate
Storytelling of the trip (optional)
We would like to thank all the contributors to this update. And in particular those who have co-constructed some of the developments, tested with enthusiasm and/or reread with a careful eye the different intermediate versions of the support.
The current version is the result of collective work carried out by the permanent 2tons and supported by the facilitator community.
Up-to-date animation support is available on the “Tools to facilitate” page.
It is strongly recommended to consult the training resources presented below before your first animation.
Preliminary notions
As with the entire workshop, no specific level of expertise is expected from the facilitator to use this new support. The notions sufficient for animation are presented in the resources area and notes associated with each slide provide context when necessary.
It is nevertheless possible, depending on requests and opportunities, that we eventually offer educational content allowing us to deepen the concepts introduced by the update: planetary borders and donut theory, biodiversity, social issues, transition resources, mitigation and adaptation.
Developments
This section brings together all the changes brought about by this update, in the order in which the workshop was run.
It presents these developments.
The first part of the quiz introduces the Donut with:
2 positive questions about the development of humanity;
Presentation of the ecological costs of our development model;
Introduction of the notions of social issues and planetary borders;
Presentation of the Donut.
Addition of a question on the impact of global warming of 5°C.
This slide allows us to address climate issues in a little more depth with less aware participants (for example those who have not experienced a climate fresco).
Quiz: the 2 tonnes
We specify in particular:
The notions of trajectory and crossing point;
The objective of 2 tonnes in 2050 for the entire world population: an educational objective (rounded) but compatible with the 1.5°C scenarios of the IPCC.
Rules (simplified version)
The adaptations were made to simplify the animation of this sequence by limiting it to the essentials. The detail is in fact useless at this stage and often forgotten by the participants when approaching the first rounds of the game.
Debrief round 2: Biodiversity Focus
Presentation of the 5 factors of the collapse of biodiversity;
Introduction of the notions of co-benefits and points of tension;
Identification of co-benefits and points of tension of the cards of round 2 with regard to biodiversity.
Debrief round 3: Transport emission factors
Addition of the electric bike emission factor;
Highlighting the concepts of emissions per vehicle and per passenger.
Debrief round 3: Suggestion of influence
Added a question suggesting the role of influence in round 3 debrief
Following the latest developments, we realized that participants emphasized the importance of influence less during the debrief. This question gives the anims the opportunity to mention the subject. An opening is also possible on the amount of the budget for round 4 (which may increase).
Debrief round 4: Focus on Social Issues
The Social Issues focus is intended to be very free to allow facilitators to address different topics depending on the group
The objective is to involve participants as much as possible to bring out the social issues linked to the transition. Suggestions are presented in the notes of each slide to guide you in leading the debrief.
2035: Mid-term point
It is integrated to help participants take a step back on:
The speed of evolution of social norms;
The fact that the thinking and decision-making framework of tomorrow will necessarily be different from that of today.
We use the example of banning the use of cigarettes in public places, but other examples could be used.
Storytelling round 6: High Council for the Climate
Replacement of the image of Jean Marc Jancovici by the entire High Council for Climate as an expert:
More legitimacy;
More inclusive.
Definition of the different types of resources;
Identification of co-benefits and points of tension of turn 6 cards with respect to resources.
Debrief round 7: Focus Adaptation (optional)
For reasons of duration of the workshop, and complexity of animation, we had to make choices and decided to make this debrief optional. You are nevertheless free to use it if you have the time and/or if the subject is particularly close to your heart.
Presentation of climate risk factors;
Reflection on adaptation solutions;
Presentation of the notions of local issues which respond to hazards and vulnerabilities.
New workshop debrief
In our opinion, the modifications allow for better fluidity and the transmission of the right messages. It is divided into 2 parts
Simulation lessons;
Back to reality.
This has been adapted to better integrate the new messages.
Storytelling of the trip (Optional)
For facilitators who wish, it is possible to use travel storytelling throughout the workshop:
Home: "Let's go on a trip..., I will be your guide..."
Ice breaker / round table: "Let's meet our rope party..."
Quiz: “Let’s put together our equipment…”
Round 1: “Here we go…”
2035: "Let's take a break..."
Debrief: “Well done, let’s go back, take the time to look at the progress we’ve made”
Conclusion: “standard” messages
You are free to continue to spin the metaphor!
We want this storytelling to remain an option, particularly so that the neo-anims focus on the more essential aspects of the workshop.
Removal of “Orders of magnitude” slides
The orders of magnitude of individual actions are removed in favor of emissions factors;
The collective orders of magnitude are hidden and their use is strongly discouraged due to the new debriefs proposed for the collective tours.
Graphics update
You will have noticed that the entire support has undergone a complete graphic overhaul, for a lighter and more elegant design 🤩
