Soweto

Soweto is an urban settlement or 'township' in South Africa, south-west of Johannesburg. Soweto was created in the 1930s when the White government started separated Black People from White People. Black People were moved away from Johannesburg to an area separated from White suburbs. It experienced civil unrest during the Apartheid regime. There were several riots there over many years which continued until the first multiracial elections in 1994.

In 2010, South Africa's oldest township held the Fifa Soccer World Cup Final and the attention of more than a billion soccer spectators from all over the world was focused on Soweto.

Few places in the world can tell you so much about a country's history like Soweto does. When visiting Johannesburg, one should definitely go on a tour of Soweto, where you can visit museums, Orlando Towers, FNB Stadium, Vilakazi Street and eat and drink in a shebeen where the locals go.
