Johannesburg

Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa and is one of the 50th largest urban areas in the world. It is the Provincial capital and is the seat of the Constitutional Court. Johannesburg, also known as Joburg, is the centre of gold and diamond trade and is located in the Gauteng Province in the mineral-rich Witwatersrand.

Joburg was established in 1886 following the discovery of gold on what was a farm. In 10 years the population was 100 000 inhabitants. The city now has a population of close to 5,000,000.

The city is often described as Africa's economic powerhouse and is the hub of South Africa's commercial, financial, industrial and mining undertakings.
