Food Habits

We should have met in Limassol in March 2020, but due to COVID pandemia this mobility has been cancelled.

A “golden-green leaf thrown into the Sea” and a land of “wild weather and volcanoes,” in the words of the Greek Cypriot poet Leonidas Malenis, Cyprus boasts tall mountains, fertile valleys and wide beaches. Settled for more than 10 millennia, Cyprus stands at a cultural, linguistic, historic and culinary crossroads between Europe and Asia. It has absorbed the influences including those of food, of generations of conquerors, pilgrims, and travellers.

Although globalisation has affected the way we eat, it is undeniable that diet is an inseparable aspect of our countries’ history and culture. Our aim in designing most of the Cyprus project meeting’s activities was to offer students and teachers from the five partner schools the opportunity to exchange information about our countries’ dietary customs and in extension our culture, observe similarities and differences, compare influences on everyday life. Furthermore, they would be able to disseminate this information through their families, peers and their various environments.

Questionnaire: "We are What we Eat"

Accordingly, the questionnaire administered to approximately 100 students per partner country was designed to shed light on the aspects of food customs and how they affect our health Moreover, through the assessment and presentation of results, to help students approach the terms of slow food, organic food, sustainable food and the Mediterranean diet. In conclusion, Mediterranean diet and consequently a healthy diet are not only about the foods we eat! It’s about where this food comes from, it’s about enjoying the food in company, about sharing and singing, about dancing and moving. It’s about simple food in moderation, good company in abundance, a light heart and an active lifestyle.

Excursion to the ancient theatre of Kourion

ITHACA by Constantine Cavafy

The most famous poem “Ithaca” has been written by the renowned Greek poet Constantine Cavafy, who makes an allusion of the legendary journey of Ulysses to the journey of every man through life and suggests that each person is looking for his own Ithaca, his personal supreme goal. However, in the end, it is not the goal but the journey that matters, because this journey makes us wise and gives people the richest trasure: experience, knowledge, and maturity.

We thought it appropriate to recite Ithaca during the project meeting in Limassol, Cyprus, as a celebration to the wonderful journey students and teachers from five different European schools enjoyed while BITE lasted! Even if cut short, it offered them unforgettable experiences, knowledge and much more!

Each school delegation translated a verse in their own language and it was planned to recite the poem translated in 5 languages during the visit to the ancient Greco-Roman theatre of Curium, a landmark of Cyprus with amazing acoustics and its impressive stage overlooking the Mediterranean sea.

Workshop: Multimedia elaboration of students cooking ....

The master- chef videos and recipe pages prepared by the students of Lykeio Apostolon Petrou ke Pavlou draw attention to the Mediterranean diet and to the fact that although a changing economy and lifestyle mean that the diet of many Cypriots today isn’t what it used to be, there are still many of us who continue to eat more or less as our ancestors did – hundreds and even thousands of years ago. It’s not just the food that has remained the same; it’s also the philosophy and values around it: eating in moderation, being close to the land, and sharing with those around you. Food in Cyprus is a celebration of life and it is really very social. It brings you closer to your friends, family and neighbours, and there will always be something to share, however simple it may be.
