Etude: "Rhythm"

We're going to create a piece in the style of William Russell.

Preparation:

  • Consider a rhythm or pattern that you greatly admire

  • Reflect on your sentimental and emotional response to that rhythm. Where did it come from? A song? church? school? your family? your childhood?

Execution:

  • Perform that rhythm on whatever instrument you have available and record for about 30 seconds - 1 minute. Feel free to mix it up with yourself as you go along, adding slight variations while maintaining the core pulse.

  • Make multiple versions as you like that could be freely layered on top of one another. Imagine the other versions in your mind as you perform.

  • Submit your recording(s)

To the director:

  • Organize the patterns as you see fit
