Etude: "Everything We Do is Music"

We're going to create a piece in the style of John Cage.

Preparation:

  • Consider the sounds and instruments of your environment, in particular sounds created by your actions

  • Choose 5 sounds that you find interesting and that you can "perform" reasonably well. Each sound should fit into one of the following categories: short (quarter note), medium (half note), or long (whole note)

  • Organize your sounds low to high and label them A, B, C, D, E.

Composition:

  • Use RNG to develop your score. 1 = A play, 2 = A rest, and so on. If A is a long note and you get a 2, that means you will have a whole rest.

  • Employ the RNG process and write out your results on a 5-line staff (use the lines where A = bottom line, etc.) until you have a total of 30 bars of 4/4 or 120 beats.

Execution:

  • Perform and record yourself to a metronome at 60 bpm. Begin your recording with a count off of four clicks. Make sure that the metronome is not audible in the recording.

  • Upload your recording to be organized as an ensemble piece.

To the director:

  • Organize the recordings based on the four-click countoff
