HU Biology Department News
Summer 2023 The department had 18 students participapting in our summer research program. The results of the projects will be presented at the Hamline Interdisciplinary Student Research Symposium in September.
July/August 2023 Kathryn Malody attended the annual National Association of Scientific Materials Managers (NAOSMM) conference in New Orleans, LA.
January 2023 - Welcome to our newest faculty member, Dr. Divya Bhaskaran. Dr. Bhaskaran will teach courses in the Biology and Exercise Science programs such as BioMechanics and Kinesiology, and Human Anatomy and Physiology. Dr. Bhaskaran begins teaching on campus spring 2023.
Summer 2022 - Dr. Leif Hembre is now the Chair of the Biology Department and also Administrative Head (Life, Mind, and Health Sciences).
Summer 2022 - Dr. Irina Makarevitch accepted the position of Associate Provost for Accreditation and Compliance in the Hamline Provost office. While we miss her daily presence in the department, she has not gone too far. We are fortunate to have her in the Provost office.
Summer 2022 - The department had 13 students participating in our summer research program. The results of their projects were presented at the Hamline Collaborative Research Symposium on September 22, 2023.
July 2022 - Franz Joseph left the biology lab staff and began a Ph.D. program in Environmental engineering at the University of MN.
December 2021 - Dr. Michael Farris retired after teaching and researching ecology, evolution, environmental biology, botany and physiology at Hamline for 33 yrs.
Fall 2020 - Campus welcomes students back to campus with various class modalities: Face-to-Face, Hybrid, and Online. Full COVID-19 precautions in place include: face-coverings, 6ft distancing, surface disinfecting, frequent hand washing, and gathering size restrictions.
March 2020 - COVID-19 causes all Hamline classes to go online. No Face-toFace activities.
Fall 2019 - Dr Lisa Ferguson Stegall is on sabbatical fall semester
July/Aug 2019 - Kathryn Malody and Frantz Joseph attended the annual National Association of Scientific Materials Managers (NAOSMM) conference in Pittsburgh, PA
Summer 2019 - The department had 12 students participating in our summer research program. Learn all about it during the Hamline Research Symposium on September 19, 2019, at 11:20-12:40 in the Anderson Center Forum.
January 2019 - Dr Hembre's manuscript "Effects of a rainbow trout stocking moratorium on the Daphnia species composition and water quality of Square Lake (Minnesota)" has been successfully submitted online and is presently being copyedited for publication in Lake and Reservoir Management.
