Evaluating the Wisconsin Grassland Bird Conservation Area Model

Sue Vang '14Abstract:

Bird population has been on the decline and can be traced back to the start of the industrial revolution; but many birds species has been hit hard the past three decades. Migratory birds, water fowls, woodland birds and grassland birds are four types of birds that have been hit significantly; each of their population has decline more than 70% over the last three decades. There are efforts to help protect their population through conservation models. In Wisconsin, the USFWS are currently in the progress of setting up a newer conservation model for grassland birds; however, not much study has been done to evaluate the bird population within the protected area. This on-going study aims to evaluate the Wisconsin grassland bird conservation model.

Kinesiology Taping with Shoulder Impingement Syndrome

Marissa Smith '14Abstract:

The relevance of shoulder injuries has affected many people throughout their life. Prevalence of shoulder injuries affects 7% to 36% of the population and is one of the main complaints among orthopedic and physical therapy clinics. Since shoulder injuries affect many of us, research was done to find the ways others have tried to addressed this issue. One of the least invasive and fast acting techniques was Kinesiolocial taping. This was a skin like tape that could be applied at different resistance to allow for musculoskeletal support and alignment. This presentation will talk about the use of this Kinesiolocial tape with treatment of shoulder impingement syndrome. They tested pain intensity and nocturnal pain intensity with a visual analog scale. They also tested pain free range of motion with a standard goniometer for abduction, flexion, and scapular plane elevation. When applied the researchers found that there was a significant change in pain intensity and nocturnal pain intensity from before any tape too immediately after taping, but no significance was seen for pain free range of motion tests or any long term effects. Kinesiolocial taping can be used to assist many treatments, and could be used along with physical therapy to allow for decreased pain while going through the motions, but alone is not a long term treatment.
