A Research Based Therapy Development Treatment Plan for a 3 year old Diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy

Rosie Giese '19

My presentation is based off a case study I completed for my independent study. The client I was given, Ashley, is three years old and suffers from cerebral palsy. Her mother wanted to learn more about the disease as well as have me develop a treatment plan that did not include medication to improve Ashley’s sensory perception and plantar flexion in her feet. I analyzed many articles and wrote a literature review. This literature review covered the causes and typical treatments for cerebral palsy, as well as novel treatments. Based upon my research, I concluded that Ashley should participate in sensory integration therapy five days a week, hippotherapy two days a week, and complete games on the Wii balance board three days a week. The outcome was measured using the Modified Ashworth Scale and the Gross Motor Function Measure. If Ashley’s scores significantly increase after 12 weeks, we will continue the program. If not, we will reevaluate the therapies and perhaps add some other therapies I researched. It is important that both Ashley and her mother see success from the therapies.
