The idea of a ‘live-in Relationship’ is not new at all, it’s just people are more open and accepting about it in today’s era.

A live-in relationship is similar to that of marriage excluding the paperwork and social drama. The young generation has started pushing the idea of marriage far behind, they’ve started adopting a comparatively unstable way of family development called a ‘live-in relationship’. Many countries have legally accepted this concept along with providing unmarried couples the same rights as that of married couples. Others however are pretty strict in accepting this newly emerging concept. Man or a woman wishing to start their lives have a full right to decide whether to live-in or marry. There are a few reasons of why youngsters prefer live-in relationships over marriage. Since, Marriage in a written commitment hence moving on from such commitments is really brain draining for most people. People fear having to compromise their lifestyles in case the couple is not compatible. The solution to freedom from such fear brought up the idea of live-in relationship where partners can live together as friends till they figure out ways to understand each other. A few also think of marriage as a waste of money and that they think that their love or bond requires no legal paper work.

Often the word ‘Cohabitation’ is used for such relationships. Plenty of states disapprove an unmarried couple living together; these laws however are no longer applied. Yet Cohabitation is considered as a taboo in most states mostly amongst the elderly people of the society. Laws support the stable form of family development and hence a lot of laws are specifically devised to support married couples in order to promote the idea of stable family formation. Thus, similar ease is not provided to couple who are not legally married. Moreover, one of the partners of the live-in relationship may face serious difficulties in case the other one faces injuries or requires long term medical care. This however can be avoided if the couple signs a few documents including the medical power of attorney. This document provides the partner with legal power to make decision for the other in case of serious injury or mental disability. Many laws have also been made in order to protect women from domestic violence. Many states have made laws to protect any victim of violence either they are married or are cohabiting for a certain period of time. This means that women can report abuse irrespective of the fact the she’s the part of marriage or live-in relationship. Involvement of Families:

Generally, marriages are of two types: Love marriage and arranged marriage. However, families from both sides are involved in both cases. This provides and additional emotional support to the newly-wed couple. In case of a live-in relationship, no one else other than the couple is involved in the relationship.

Personal Freedom:

Marriage is an all life commitment. It requires the partners to take all the responsibility. One is answerable to the other hence the personal freedom of an individual is partially restricted. While, in a Living relationship there are no requirements and no one is bound answerable to the other. This is another reason why youngsters tend to follow ideas such as ‘Live-in relationships’, because personal freedom is precious to them.

Compatibility:

Live-in relationships allow the participants to test the compatibility of their partner. In marriage, no such edge is provided and hence often when wrong people involve themselves in legal marriages divorce is the only option left to lead a healthy life. This is another reason why youngsters prefer relationships over marriages as they set it as a trial for marriage.

Separation:

Separating from someone you connect with is often heart breaking. Many adults find divorce way tougher than a breakup. This is why they prefer breaking up in case the relationship does not work as it is easier to move on from.

Kids:

Children who are born to married couple are usually more and accepted by the society compared to those born to a couple in a live-in relationship. Hence, marriage plays a vital role in securing the future of the newly born kid. Un-married couple might also nourish the kid but that would require serious commitments.

Mental health:

Researchers have stated that married couples have seen to having better mental and physical health compared to those who are not married. Depression have hit mostly to couples involved in live-in relationships.

Oppression:

A lot of youngsters today supporting feminism believe that marriage is path way to oppressing and enslaving women. As, in most cultures women is described as the object making all the compromises required to keep the family together. This is why adults hesitate to choose marriage as a pathway to develop a family.

The easy way out maybe the biggest advantage while being in a live-in relationship but lack of commitment is a huge disadvantage of it. The uncertainty factor that is added up in relationships today has made it easy for the partners to move on. This leads to a lot of problems that may involve the problems a child goes through if he’s born in a live-in relationship. Since such relationships have no legal base, the child has no legal right to claim his father’s inheritance. They may go through mental trauma in case the parents separate and this may develop mistrust within them. Moreover, such relationships leave a lasting impact on the mother of the child. The father may choose to move on and hence the burden lies on the shoulder of the single mother. This may cause depression, suicidal thoughts or mental instability in a few cases. Often such trial based relationships makes the participants so used to such lifestyle that delaying the marriage becomes their favorite option.
