The owners of this 1960s mid-century modern home wanted to make over their dark, closed-off kitchen. The dysfunctional layout discouraged “family cooking night,” and the dining space was disjointed from the kitchen. A must-have from the homeowners: Keep the home’s 1960s vibe, but update and modernize the kitchen and dining spaces with an open concept floorplan.

The custom cabinetry in the quartz-topped island now houses a cooktop, built-in oven and microwave, providing ample workspace and additional storage. The team moved the refrigerator to the opposite wall, creating a more efficient use of the space, and they customized the hood vent to accommodate the slanted ceiling. The homeowners can enjoy key architectural elements, such as the original exposed wood beams and A-frame-shaped windows, from all main floor areas.

At the owner’s request, the original birch cabinets and hardware remained, as well as original period light fixtures. The new white herringbone-designed tile backsplash adds contrast to the sleek quartz countertops.

The team converted the cramped laundry room into a pet-friendly pantry. The mustard color of the herringbone-pattern tile adds a pop of color and compliments the warmth of the original mahogany veneer in the dining room. The adjoining powder room tile and decor now match the home’s 1960s flair.
