Crash Course about the Writing Center

What is the Writing Center?

The University of Guam's Division of English and Applied Linguistics (DEAL) Writing Center is a tutorial resource run by students for students and is funded by course fees from those enrolled in composition classes. Students may either walk-in or email to schedule an appointment with one of our tutors.

Where is the Writing Center?

We are located on the second floor of the English & Communications Building in room EC204

What can the writing center help me with?

Our main goal is to help students become better writers. Students may come in at any point of the writing process for assistance. That is: students may come in for minor issues such as finding a topic for a research paper or constructing a thesis statement, to larger, more complicated tasks such as structuring an argument or integrating research

The Writing Center offers several other resources too, including MSL (MySkillsLab) assistance, group workshops, and Exit-Essay simulations. We also maintain copies of the texts used in composition courses that may be used on-site.

What can't the writing center help me with?

1. The Writing Center is not an editing firm. You cannot drop your paper to us and expect to pick up a revised copy later.

2. The Tutors are not your professors. Please do not expect us to estimate what grade your assignment may receive based on our feedback.

3. The Tutors are not your best friends. We will neither respond to criticisms about instructors, nor offer recommendations regarding which ones to take.

4. The Writing Center is not a printing service. Please print your paper at the Computer Lab before your session (keep in mind that this is required).
