Barger Leadership Institute (BLI)

The Barger Leadership Institute works to strengthen students' leadership and professional skills, as well as providing students with networking opportunities and funding resources. Every year, BLI aims to develop a cohort of actionable leaders through ALA 175, a 1-credit mini course focusing on leadership skill building and project planning.

Center for Socially Engaged Design (C-SED)

The Center for Socially Engaged Design trains future engineers and designers to integrate social, cultural, economic, and environmental context into technology design processes and to involve stakeholders as co-designers. We support curricular and co-curricular design teams with online and in-person skill building through the Socially Engaged Design Academy, offer a consultation service with design experts from across campus, and host regular "Deep Dive" workshops. Undergraduate students may also declare one of these 9-credit specialized study programs: Socially Engaged Design, Global Health Design, or Sustainable Engineering. We are a point-counterpoint publication that published student opinions on relevant campus political, social, and economic issues. Our main goals for this coming school year are too focus on publishing student views on voting/civic engagement and to best adapt to the online meeting settings.

Detroit Community Engaged Research Program

The Detroit Community Engaged Research Program (DCERP) is a summer internship program run through the University of Michigan Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program that places students with community based organizations in full-time research positions. Students conduct research projects addressing issues such as urban development, environmental justice, food security, community assessment, and sustainability that are initiated and identified by community based organizations in Detroit. Students in the program also live together at Wayne State University, attend seminars taught by our community partners, blog about their experience living and working in Detroit, and lead weekly group meetings to build a greater sense of community among the program participants.

Indigenous Africa

Student Organization

Indigenous Africa is dedicated to educating students about violations against Indigenous Peoples in Africa, and providing an organization that allows an avenue of hands-on experience for those interested in international concerns.

We are dedicated to thoroughly researching cases of violations against Indigenous Peoples in Africa and presenting it on a public web-mapping platform in order to educate. Additionally, we hope to create a presence on campus that highlights international issues so that students will have the opportunity to be exposed to

matters outside of the United States, and be able to take part in advocacy and educational projects.

PULSE

Student Organization and University Program

PULSE is a student-run, UHS-sponsored organization promoting health, wellness, and social justice across campus through peer interactions, informative programming within many different communities, and campus-wide collaborations. Our mission is to encourage students to make thoughtful choices that reduce harm and promote well-being. Our main purpose is to plan events and center conversations on campus around the topics of health, wellness and social justice. We view these concepts are holistic and intersectional, and understand that they are all vital to student success and total well being.

SAPAC PLSG: Peer -Led Support Group

Student Organization

SAPAC's General Peer Led Support Group is an open drop-in, confidential healing space that meets twice a week for University of Michigan students who identify as survivors of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, sexual harassment, or stalking. The group aims to empower survivors and facilitate resilience, reconnection, stress relief, and anxiety reduction for our participants. We’ll be doing this through semi-structured activities, self-care practices, creative arts, and creating a safe space for sharing and processing if participants choose to do so.

School of Social Work

The School will provide an excellent education to students and practitioners in the knowledge and skills needed for contemporary and evolving social work practice. The School will create and disseminate knowledge about individual, community, and organizational concerns; social issues; social policy; and practice interventions, within a tradition of multi-disciplinary and multi-professional research. The School will engage in service to the community, the profession, and society through collaboration and leadership.

Semester in Detroit

The Semester in Detroit mission is to engage U-M undergraduates in substantive, sustained and reciprocal relationships with the people and communities of the City of Detroit. Combining a semester-long residence in the city with rigorous academic study and a comprehensive community-based internship, SiD students become deeply involved in – and committed to – the life, challenges, and promise of this important American city. In the upcoming school year, we hope to involve more students in our program and strive to make SiD accessible to all UM students who wish to participate and engage with Detroit. We also aim to engage with new communities and organizations in the city.

Tech for Social Good at the University of Michigan

The mission of Tech for Social Good is to foster a space for people who want to advocate for social justice causes through the lens of working in technology. This upcoming school year, our goals include: a) working with our existing community-based partners through project teams; b) host and expand speaker events, alumni panels, and critical discussions; c) advance advocacy effort on education and policy making regarding the negative influence and lack of awareness of big tech companies; d) connect with potential future partners.
