BROADWAY SHOPPING CENTER
Address: Broadway
City: Bangor ME
Opening Date: 1961
As you can see on the two pictures below, this shopping center has the same size today but it changed a lot. This plaza opened in 1961. It was home to one of the first Zayre stores in northern New England. The center had three discount stores in somewhat the same niche, more or less selling the same products, something not seen in today’s shopping centers: Zayre, S.S.Kresge and Grants were together at the Broadway Shopping center then known as the Bangor Shopping Center. There was a Rexall pharmacy to the left of Grants and a supermarket at left of Rexall.

Zayre became an Ames around 1988-89 after the acquisition. In 1998, Ames left the plaza and relocated its store at the Airport Mall in the former Rich’s. Tjmaxx'n more opened at the former Ames location. Shop'n save later renamed its store to the Hannaford banner. Pizza Hut opened a brand new, larger restaurant near the plaza. Their former location became a Quizno's and is today an Amato's.
As you can see, the former Zayre style is still present on the Tjmaxx building. The store is now branded as Tjmaxx/HomeGoods. In May 2017, Payless Shoesource announced the closing of 387 U.S. stores including the Broadway location.
