Closeout / Bargain / New discount stores

With the large number of retailers that went out of business in the past decade, a lot of retail space has become available for other kinds of retailers. After the liquidation of these store chains, some merchandise may remain unsold. These items, along with surplus and closeouts from vendors needs to be sold somewhere. 

New store are replacing these closing chains with non-standard concepts. Christmas Tree Shops is offering an array of merchandise often not seen at other national chain. Big Lots and Ocean State Job Lot are closeout chains offering overstock, discontinued and other discounted merchandises but also offer regular name-brand products. Other small discount store chains are also emerging. 

Marden's is a Maine-based surplus & salvage store chain with 14 stores.

Big Lots is the largest closeout chain of the U.S. currently operating more than 1,400 stores.

Ocean State Job Lot is a Rhode Island-based closeout chain with more than 120 stores.

Reny's is a Maine-based discount store chain with 16 stores.

Christmas Tree Shops was not a closeout store but offered a changing array of merchandise at bargain prices. They  once had more than 80 stores.

Bob's Discount was a Maine closeout chain started in 1991. The company closed and emerged as Chapter 11 Buybacks Job Lot.


Building #19 was a Massachussetts-based closeout chain with 15 stores in New England.
