CLASS PROCEDURES AND GRADING POLICY

Course Identification: Naval Science I, one semester, 5 credits

Grades 9-12. Prerequisite:

Enrolled in and attending a regular course of instruction in Sterling HS.

Be physically qualified to participate fully in the NJROTC program.

(must have a current physical on file)

Approved by the NJROTC instructors and school principal.

2. Course Description: This course introduces the cadets to the meaning of citizenship, the elements of leadership, and the value of scholarship in attaining life goals. The course engenders a sound appreciation for the heritage and traditions of the United States. The course goal is to develop in each cadet a growing sense of pride in his or her organization, associates, and self. These elements are taught at the fundamental level. The wearing of a Naval Junior ROTC uniform and maintaining grooming standards is mandatory.

4. Course Requirements

a. Students will be required to summit homework via EMAIL to the instructors gmail account

b. Bring textbook, notebook, and pencil or pen to class each day.

c. Notebook is a three ring binder which contains

1. Class regulations

2. Class notes (dated)

3. Worksheets and handouts (dated)

4. Homework (dated with page assignments)

5. Quizzes and tests (dated)

d. Students are responsible for assignments missed when they are absent.

e. Students who are absent for a test or quiz will be expected to make it up promptly.

f. Make-ups will be during a study hall or after school at 2:45 p.m.

5. Grading Policy:

Each quarter will equal 45% of the overall course grade. The remaining 10% will be summative assessments consisting of the final.

Quarterly assessments of the academic grade will consist of:

Communication 25% Essays, Presentations, Debates, Group Discussions

Followership /Leadership 25% Appropriate class Discussion, Ability to work effectively alone or as a member of a team, Respect for class room norms (rules), teachers and peers.

Content 25% All naval science course content

Application 25% Projects, Culminating Assignments, Presentations, Gathering info and using Technology

Letter grades: A 93-100

B 85-92

C 77-84

D 70-76

F Below 70

6. Extra help is always available to students experiencing difficulty. Naval Science Instructors will be available after school at 2:45. You should have specific questions about the material which you do not understand. Don’t wait until the last minute. Seek help as soon as you know you are having difficulty.

2. Course Description: This course builds on the general introduction provided in Naval Science I. The traits of citizenship and leadership are further developed through promotions and assignment of billets of increased responsibility. The course introduces cadets to several technical subjects of Naval Science. The wearing of a Naval Junior ROTC uniform and maintaining grooming standards is mandatory.

2. Course Description: This course broadens the understanding of the operative principles of Naval Forces to support National Security. Both Military Law and International law are studied to understand the impact on National Strategy and Naval Operations. The traits of citizenship and leadership are further developed through promotions to the Officer and senior enlisted cadet ranks. Emphasis is placed on increasing leadership skills through the assignment of duties which are of a more complex and demanding nature. The wearing of a Naval Junior ROTC uniform and maintaining grooming standards is mandatory.

2. Course Description: This course is focused on the further development of leadership skills begun in Naval Science III through theoretical and applied leadership. Course content includes reading assignments, case studies, and practical work with younger cadets. Effective written communication is emphasized. In addition, basic financial planning is covered. The wearing of a Naval Junior ROTC uniform and maintaining grooming standards is mandatory.
