Promotion Requirements/Matrix

To be promoted, there are a number of steps you must accomplish. This page is designed to walk you through the promotion process step by step, so that you know what you need to study and prepare for. If you want to track your progress towards promotion, get together with your Platoon MPO or a Cadet Staff Officer and they can show you on your PERSONAL ADVANCEMENT REQUIREMENTS (PARs) Form where you stand on your requirements (Appendix 3 in the Cadet Hand book). Here are the PERSONAL ADVANCEMENT REQUIREMENTS (PARs) to promote:

PERSONAL ADVANCEMENT REQUIREMENTS (PARs)

Note: The terms rate and rank are interchangeable.

The following requirements must be met in order for a cadet to be advanced to each respective rate. Knowledge and performance test contents are commensurate to the grade level of the cadet and shall be determined by the promotion board. The knowledge and performance tests for all rates may be completed at any time. The cadet must provide a valid proof for every community service performed.

The Platoon Commander will initial each completed requirement. in the line of duty

The Commanding Officer is the promotion board president and shall convene the board two (2) weeks prior to each established advancement day.

These PARs will be maintained in the company admin file.

1. SEAMAN RECRUIT (SR), basic rank awarded to entry level cadets.

2. SEAMAN APPRENTICE (SA), advancement day is the third Wednesday of December

Senior Leadership Ranks/Rates

Advancement to the rates of Chief Petty Officer, Senior Chief Petty Officer, Master Chief Petty Officer, and all commissioned officer ranks from Ensign to Commander are by selection only. These rates/ranks are commensurate to the established senior positions of leadership in the company. Selection to these rates/ranks are billet-driven and therefore, temporary. In the event that a cadet is relieved of his/her leadership position, the cadet shall be administratively reduced to his/her last rate and no higher than PO1. The instructors have absolute authority in the selection and administrative reduction processes. The criteria for selection to the senior leadership ranks and rates are as follows.

a. Must be a senior, junior or sophomore cadet

b. Successfully complete any one of the following leadership training

1. STERLING NJROTC Leadership Workshop

2. Area 4 Leadership Academy

3. Area 4 Sail Academy

c. Apply for a senior leadership position

d. Show sustained superior performance

e. Exhibit the ability to take on greater responsibility

f. Pass the physical fitness test with a minimum grade of Satisfactory

1. Academic Examination: Every Cadet must pass an academic examination to be eligible for promotion. There are 5 tests that cover specific knowledge areas, and a sixth test made up of random questions from the first 5. The questions on each of these tests come from the Naval Science textbooks and the Cadet Field Manual. Practice exams and study quizzes are available. 3. Close Order Drill Practical Evaluation: To be promoted from Cadet Seaman through the rate of Cadet Chief Petty Officer, each Cadet must demonstrate proficiency in various aspects of close order drill. The table below shows the required Practical Examination number of each rate:

4. Good Conduct: In addition to the requirements listed above, each Cadet must maintain minimum standards of acceptable conduct both within the NJROTC classroom and within the school. This will be determined by the SNSI and NSI for each Cadet.

5. Good Personal / Uniform Appearance: In addition to the requirements listed above, each Cadet must maintain minimum standards of personal appearance and uniform appearance. This will be determined by the SNSI and NSI for each Cadet.

6. Recommendation by Chain of Command: The last requirement for promotion is a positive recommendation by the Cadet's Platoon Commander, the Company Commander, the Naval Science Instructor and the Senior Naval Science Instructor. When the last of these requirements is completed, the Cadet will be eligible for a promotion board to be convened by the Commanding Officer at preset dates during the school year.
