Year 9 Camp - Scientist in Residence

2012 Camp

Following the success of last year's camp, the 2012 Year 9 students at the Charnwood Outdoor Education camp once again had the opportunity to build and launch low-power rockets.

2011 Camp

At the 2011 Year 9 camp at Charnwood students at had the opportunity to build and launch their own rockets.

2010 Camp

At the Year 9 Charnwood Camp, the students had an opportunity to participate in tours of the night sky, scorpion hunts, and searching for rocks with anomalous radioactive readings. The star nights and scorpion hunts generated considerable interest amongst the students, as well as raising many open-ended discussion questions.

2008 Camp

Following the success of the 2007 program (see below), Martin again conducted small group discussions and investigations of the geology and eco-systems of the local bush area in Charnwood. At dinner time, the students were dazzled by a variety of high tech materials, which included a metal alloy that would contract with incredible strength when placed in contact with water. Later in the evening, two telescopes were set up, which permitted a tour of the night sky. Students had an opportunity to get a closer look at Saturn and its rings, the only visible planet in the night sky.

2007 Camp

Martin Harris, the visiting scientist, conducted small group discussions and investigations of the geology and eco-systems of the local bush area in Charnwood. In the evening he conducted a scorpion hunt by UV light, as well as running a number of fluorescence and chemiluminescence experiments. The students thoroughly enjoyed the activities that they undertook, with the scorpion hunt deemed the highlight.
