Battle of the Sciences

Each year students from VCE Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology do battle in regular lunchtime science trivia matches, with the aim of being crowned the Science Trivia Champions. The original idea was to have four teams, one from each science discipline for each VCE year level (i.e. Years 11 and 12), but in 2010 the popularity of the competition amongst the students resulted in an expanded number of teams registering and participating. The grand final pits the best Year 11 and 12 teams against one another at the end of term 3. Such a fun (trivia-based) and friendly competition has clearly ignited a passion for the Sciences.

2012 Program

This competition continues to enjoy strong student support. In 2012 it was run by Claire Stanner, the new Head of Senior Science, and for the first time Year 9 and 10 students were invited to participate alongside the Year 11 and 12 students.

The preliminary round was held on Tuesday 21st August in a packed Kobritz Auditorium with teams of students and a team of teachers answering a variety of Science trivia questions. Watch this space for details of the final, which took place in the first week of Term 4.

2011 Program

The preliminary final of this VCE competition was held Thursday lunchtime 28th July. A very impressive turnout of 13 teams (from Year 11 and 12) plus a large student audience made this a very successful event.

The final was conducted early in term 4. The top four teams from the Year 11 preliminary round faced-off against the top four teams from the Year 12 preliminary round, in the grand final. To add some extra fun, the final eight student teams would not only be competing against each other, but also against a team of (non-science) teachers.

This year’s Champions were the Year 12 Biology team Biology Awesome!, consisting of Oscar Davis, Ellie Kay and Danielle Rusanov. In addition to earning ‘bragging’ rights that their particular scientific discipline Rules!, they were each presented with an item of scientific apparel.
