AIX/PS2

This is not an exact translation, just the steps of the installation.

Install choices are in italics, command lines in code format.

Environment and requirements

Linux host (in this example: Ubuntu 10.04 i386)

Bochs 2.4.5

FreeDOS install floppy image including FDISK, FORMAT, SYS, BOOTMGR

AIX/PS2 1.3 install images (15 disks)

PTF0024 SCSI boot images (2 disks)

PTF0024 install image (1 disk)

PTF0024-U436295 update images (3 disks)

a ~/.bochsrc including:

8MB RAM
boot floppy 0xaa55 check turned off

Create Bochs disk image

300MB, for example

$ nohup dd if=/dev/zero of=./944x14x46.chs count=$[944*14*46]

Create filesystem for FreeDOS

Boot from FreeDOS floppy. Choose either option, for example, #1:

1 - Start FreeDOS for 186 based system

At the prompt, start fdisk by typing in the command and hitting Enter.

Choose No to use FAT16:

Do you want to use large disk (FAT32) support (Y/N). [N]?

Create DOS partition...

Create Primary...

Leave some room for the AIX install on the disk:

Do you wish to use the maximum...? [N]

Set 33MB to use with FreeDOS:

Enter partition size... [ 33]

After creating the partition, set it active:

Set Active partition

Exit fdisk

Restart Bochs system and format previously created partition

Format new partition with FreeDOS

1 - Start FreeDOS for 186 based system

At the prompt:

format c: /q  /u /s

Answer yes and enter a label.

Copy the floppy's contents to the disk partition

copy a:*.* c:

Don't overwrite KERNEL.SYS and COMMAND.COM (answer no)

Restart Bochs system

Install boot manager

Boot from floppy

At the prompt:

bootmgr

Change the FreeDOS partition:

Rename partition (?)

Set default (?)

Write MBR - Master Bootstrap Loader to install: [B]OOTMGR - Enter

Quit

Install AIX mini system

Change the floppy to the first AIX install image

NVRAM Configuration - Enter

Select keyboard layout

Make sure you use a matching layout on the Bochs host

Select monitor type (VGA w/8512 works fine)

Select time zone

Select NLS translation language

Enter machine name (will be visible in the disk label)

Boot from diskette

Load a system from diskette - accept defaults

At "Please insert BOOT diskette number 2:" Change floppy in Bochs

Make sure you click in the following order:

Config
Host (terminal) window title
After changing floppy and continuing emulation: inside the guest window

At "Insert installation diskette and press ENTER": Change to " Install0024.img"

At "Remove Non-AIX Partitions": Arrow down to Write New Partition Table (F3 may also work), Enter

Confirm (y)

At "System Installation": Select "Install and customize AIX" (default)

Would like to add any other bad sectors: n

Continue

At "Install a new version of AIX"

Install a new AIX system (default)

At "The installation method... Do you wish to proceed?": select Yes

At "Install and customize AIX": Change current choices and install

Change minidisk sizes for each filesystem.

A possible sizing schema (in blocks):

/u 65536
/hostname 65536
/ 73356
page 16384
dump 16384
/hostname/tmp 32768

Install the operating system...

To INSTALL AIX, press Enter.

At "Installation of the mini system is complete": Restart Bochs system

Complete the installation of AIX

Boot from the same AIX install image

At "Load a system from diskette": Run system from hard disk: Yes

Let the system boot

At "Continue installation": Choose "Diskette Drive 0"

Insert each of the 15 install floppy images after each other.

"The new version of AIX was installed successfully."

Console login mode - Normal console login

At "Install program products": Continue Installation

At "Post Installation...": Return to the system installation menu

End Installation

Apply updates

Restart Bochs system

Boot from Diskette

Run system from hard disk: Yes

Insert boot diskette number 2

At "Do you want to enter system maintenance?": Yes

At "Give root password...": Enter (root password has not been set)

You are now at a single user prompt.

# updatep -ac

Answer yes

Insert #1 of the PTF0024-U436295 images

At "ID Update", select to apply all updates (5)

Answer Yes as required, proceeding with the two other floppy images.

After getting back to the prompt, exit with 'exit'

At "Do you want to enter system maintenance?": No

Wait for multi-user and one-time installation procedures to complete, then Enter for a reboot.

Set AIX as the default partition in the boot manager

Restart Bochs system

Boot from hard disk

At the prompt:

bootmgr

Change the AIX partition:

Rename partition, Set default

Write MBR - Master Bootstrap Loader to install: [B]OOTMGR - Enter

Quit

Restart Bochs system
