Magic 1990 - 1998

Magic 828 was launched by Roger Kirk at 8:28am on 17th July 1990.

The first song played was Magical Mystery Tour, by The Beatles.

The station slogan was 'The All Time Great Music Station', as it specialised in playing music from the 60's and 70's.

The Magic 828 name was created by Bob Preedy, who was a presenter on Radio Aire at the time.

From October 1990, following the closure of the overnight sustaining service 'The Superstation', Andy Siddell took over evenings and Mike Vitti presented Niteflight (simulcast with Aire between 1am and 6am).

Weekend presenters included Johnny Moran, Steve Warren, Kev Roberts, David Hamilton and Noddy Holder (with the 70's Show).

Paul Fairburn, who was the the station Programme Controller at the time presented the Magic Jukebox on a Friday evening, whilst Phil Riley (the Managing Director) presented the CD Chart on Aire FM.

Magic Sport would be covered by Tim White and Rod Studd.

From 1991, Mark Jones took over Breakfast, as Roger Kirk had left the station to return to Hallam FM. Alex Hall also left the station to join Radio Leeds, so Tony Fogarty took over the Late Show. Tony moved over to Radio Aire FM in 1992, using the name Tony Collins. He later returned to Magic 828 in the 2000's.

Peter Tait moved to Breakfast in 1992 following Mark Jones' departure, where he remained until 2002. Andy Siddell took over the Drive show and Graham Thornton (the first presenter on Radio Aire in 1981) hosted Evenings.

Magic 828 in 1993

By 1993, Graham Thornton had left Magic 828, so Kev Roberts was moved from Weekends to present the Evening Show on weekdays.

In 1993, Roger Kirk re-joined the station to host the Late Show.

He was well known in Yorkshire, as he had also previously presented on Pennine Radio and Hallam FM. He sadly passed away in 2001.

Weekend presenters included Brian Cooke, Bob Preedy, Wayne Dutton, Alan Watkiss & Allan Hollings.

In 1994, Magic 828 introduced a new jingle package, produced by the same company who produced the original package in 1990.
