Transportation on and off Playa

The camp keeps about 30 bikes in storage for our use, all of which were bought or found used, and are maintained for yearly use (no “disposable” department store bikes for us). Some have been a part of the camp for more than 8 years running. As a camp, we perform repair work on approximately 300 bikes per year. Bikes deemed “unrepairable” have any usable components harvested for other repairs, with the remainder stashed for the steel recycler. Dead tubes are patched, bent wheels are straightened, and seized bearings are completely overhauled. No parts are thrown away unless there is no way to recover them for reuse. Workshops and continuing education teach people how to maintain bikes on the playa, and get years of service out of their playa bike. We frequently rely on the goodwill of others who come and volunteer their bike fixing services, and improved our bike area clean-up this year by borrowing the magnetic rake from the Earth Guardians! What a big help!

Most campmates carpool to arrive on-playa, or fly in with a minimum of camp materials. We rent one large rental truck each year to transport all of our community items from storage to the Playa, less than 200 miles round trip for the majority of the items that make up our camp.

Bike maintenance and use are core values of our camp. The people using our bike fix-it services and tools are required to participate in their bike repair, use tools with respect, and ALWAYS must take away their own leftover parts!
