Outreach

We love the part of our camp that involves teaching people how to fix their stuff, especially when it means they get to use their bike for the full week, or can hold onto their favorite set of poi for another year. We’re clear about expectations that they will minimize waste in fixing their gear, that they will pack out any trash from the fixing, and that if they sidle up to our bar before or after fixing their item, that they will bring their own cup. We educate bar visitors about not leaving trash, although we will accept an aluminum can if they crush it first. We have a camp policy of no tolerance for cigarette butts on the ground, particularly well-policed by our campmates who smoke themselves. All of our smoking campmates carry a pocket-sized tin for cigarette butts, and often give them out as gifts to other smokers.

Last year, during a white-out, Jim still helped several people fix their fire performance gear. We love knowing that tools like these will get their full use, and not become quick throw-aways!
