The Friends of Surrey Square Park (FoSSP) are a a likeable bunch.
I can say we are not too smart ;-) but make it up with good will and friendliness.
Again we managed through Daniel to avail ourself of the calm and comfy setting of the choir room in Pembroke House .
I love the place, the wooden stair, the stained glass, the quiet and the smell of sanctity...
Very conductive to good will and clear thinking, i found. In any case we needed all the help we could get as we had much to discuss and a great deal of tea and biscuits to get through (thanks, Daniel, Julian and Coro).
Actually we do quite a good deal of work between us and especially Julian and Daniel are thoroughly committed and dedicated fellows.
As a matter of fact we had so much to discuss, decide and schedule that without realising it, we overrun the time we booked the room for and the building had to be locked down and we had to aadjourn for the last few items of the agenda to somewhere else.
What better than to sit in our beloved Park!
So at the end we manage to go through all the items and went for a relaxing stroll and a gourmet look at some of seasonal delights of our little oasis. The newly fixed notice board, Julian as usual is to be thanked, was proof that sometimes little self-hep ways are better and less time consuming than going through the complex bureaucratic approach of having the Council repair it...
Julian was prodly showing the liverwort (Marchantiophyta) he managed patiently to coax from his magnificently cared Wild Hedge and in honour of autumnal air of the day we stopped to admire some of the rosebush now already groaning with delicately orange coloured hips and in the WildLife Area the still strong flowering that never fails to attract pollinators, and even some rare species of bumblebee, Our oak as usual has place of honour there. Still...much upheaval will be unleashed there in a non too distant future and we can only hope that the results will justify all the pain of the making.

2.1 Approval of the minutes.

3. Community Spaces programme – Sustainability Grant training courses:
3.1 Training - FoSSP members attended and successfully completed both training courses at the Trust for Urban Ecology, Stave Hill, Rotherhithe, in August this year: 4 members completed the Introduction to Writing a Management Plan, and 5 members completed the Managing an Urban Wildlife Area.
3.2 Management Plan – producing a Draft Plan
3.2.1 We reviewed all the components of the plan, and decided on which parts we would each undertake to write up, in order to break down the work involved into manageable sections.
Actions
- Daniel agreed to draw up a list of our individual tasks for us to work from. (Appendix A).
3.2.3 FoSSP Schedule for producing Management Plan:
- Produce 1st draft by end of November and present to Rebeka Clark (Stave Hill) for input/feedback.
- January/February 2014: Hold an open meeting in the neighbourhood and invite Parks department to attend. Share 1st draft (including any additions/amendments) with the local neighbourhood for input/feedback.
- Produce 2nd draft incorporating feedback from open meeting.
Actions
- Julian to flag up our plan and loose timeframe with Parks department.
3.3 Community Spaces update: Julian provided an update on money spent so far. The garden tools and litter-picking tools have now been purchased. The remaining budget needs to be spent before end of December 2013.

- Julian and Daniel to talk to Deborah McKenzie about spending remaining budget before December deadline.
3.4 Community Spaces Fun Day (held 20/04/2013)
3.4.1 Photos of event
Action: Daniel to upload the rest of the photos from the Community Spaces Fun Day into a ‘drop box’ online, and contact Frank Vickery for an update on his report of the event to Community Spaces.
3.4.2 Tracy’s report

4. Cleaner, Greener, Safer
4.1 CGS Wildlife Area
- Julian read out the schedule of works provided by Ben (TCV)
- Sketch proposals/bullet points have been produced.
- Serge is point of contact for Nils/Rebeka and FoSSP representative for the project.
- No detailed working drawings, eg. for the rain garden, have yet been provided to FoSSP.
Actions
- Serge to ask Nils for update and when works are due to start.
- FoSSP to advertise for additional volunteers, once work dates have been established.
- Serge arrange on site meeting with Nils before works commence, and procure more detail on the rain garden.
- Daniel to forward bullet point poster to Nina and Hemali (Parks).
- FoSSP to remind Rebeka about training certificates.
4.2 CGS applications for 2014/15
- Carry forward to next meeting.
5. Community Council grant for DVD
5.1 Update: Daniel reported that he has got all the footage now.
Action
- Daniel to edit footage before next FoSSP meeting in November.
6. Treasurer’s Report
6.1 Presentation: Serge presented the account. A donation from Kinglake TRA and a cash donation from local resident Julia were noted.
7. Actions outstanding from minutes of last meeting (held 8 June 2013)
7.1 item 3.1 of previous mins: Frank to write up story of Community Spaces Fun Day.
Action: Carry forward.
7.2 item 3.2 of previous mins: Wildlife Area/Park Information sign
Action: None - Sign has now been installed.
7.3 item 3.5 of previous mins: Loose handholds on climbing trees play equipment
Action: Daniel to contact Nina/Hemali and also notify them of the loose rubber safety matting.
7.4 item 6.2 of previous mins: Should FoSSP apply for an electronic account online?
Action: Carry forward.
7.5 item 7.7 of previous mins: FoSSP Group membership of TCV and public liability insurance.
Action: Done, but awaiting insurance documentation/paperwork.
7.6 item 8 of previous mins: Friends of Parks annual conference
Action: None – Daniel and Serge attended on behalf of FoSSP
7.7 item 10.1 of previous mins: lost fruit tree, Alvey Street hedge boundary.
Action: Julian has arranged with Parks for a replacement – need to check this season’s planting list.
7.8 item 10.4 of previous mins: Pembroke House “ABC Nominations”
Action: Julian nominate mature Elderflower tree in Wildlife Area.
8. Sedan Way Green Link - update
8.1 Lobbying local councillors – Frank has lobbied councillors again recently.
Actions: Continue to fight to save the 6 ash trees, and ask for the current development plans, in particular the outmoded traditional road layout for Sedan Way, to be amended, and for the Green link to be properly integrated into the development.
9. Gazebo Days
9.1 Mowing Small meadow - Set a provisional date to mow small meadow. Set up a gazebo to offer tea and biscuits, and promote FoSSP.
Actions: Date is provisional – still awaiting delivery of garden/mowing tools on order.
10. Surrey Square School – housing development
10.1 The school’s proposals were discussed.
