Class Blog

This course focuses on reading comprehension and fluency as well as building writing and vocabulary skills. Students will improve reading skills and create a classroom atmosphere where each will enjoy free reading. Reading will be required outside of the classroom.

The reading aspect of this course will focus on analysis and interpretation of the literary pieces we study. Students should understand common literary terms and apply these to written work.

As a student in this class, you are responsible for completing all assignments, participating in class activities, and completing readings, vocabulary, and reflections. Class assessments may be in the form of quizzes, papers, or presentations. These components will make up your total quarter and semester grades.

Minimum reading requirements will be set for each term. Students are expected to read 100 minutes each week during semester one. Book talks will be completed by due dates assigned.Please see the course calendar for Book Talk due dates. It is expected that students be respectful of due dates and complete assignments in a timely manner.

EXPLORING LITERATURE Eight Day Rotation

Day One: Vocabulary Building - hand out vocabulary for short story

Day Two: Read Aloud and comprehension exercises in partners, Independent Reading

Day Three: Work on vocabulary cards, book talks, or partner activities, Independent Reading

Day Four: Vocab Cards due; Book Talks, Independent Reading

Day Five: 100 Minute Blog Posts, Stanford testing, Independent Reading, Book Talks

Day Six: Vocab Review, Comprehension exercises in partners, Independent Reading

Day Seven: Vocabulary, Practice Quiz, Independent Reading, Book Talks

Day Eight: Vocabulary Quiz, 100 Minute Blog Posts, Book Talks, Independent Reading

**Book Talks can be completed before school, after school, by appointment, or during designated times in class.
