    • Abstract: Part of a special issue on the relevance of educational psychology to teacher education. The writers offer an alternative way to organize material related to student motivation in educational psychology courses that serve prospective teachers. The approach focuses on the principles of motivation and is loosely based on the three basic needs suggested by self-determination theory: a sense of autonomy, relatedness or belonging, and competence. The writers describe the way in which they reorganized the curriculum content related to motivation within this framework and discuss the benefits they have observed in using this approach with their students.
