Descendants of Hester Fleetwood Berry (1762-1832)

(4th generation of descent from probable progenitor Thomas Berry I of Castlecuffe, Queens Co.  :-  https://sites.google.com/site/irishberrygenealogy/eglish-berry-tree )

1.             Hester Fleetwood Berry (daughter of Thomas Berry and Frances Berry) b. 29 Jan 1762, d. 4 Jun 1832.

She married, 13 Aug 1787, Sir William Cusack-Smith, b. 1766. 2nd Baronet  M.P. K.C.  Solicitor General 1800. Baron of the Exchequer 1801. Sir William Cusack-Smith  wrote to Sir William Betham, Deputy King of Arms, Ulster,  in 1809 re. his family arms incorporating the quarterings of Lady Smith's (Berry) arms.

Hester was the author of most of the surviving letters, written to her younger brother Robert Fleetwood Berry, while he was doing his apprenticeship in Liverpool. (For transcripts of these letters see https://sites.google.com/site/irishberrygenealogy/robert-fleetwood-berry ). The first of them was written in 1794, when she was thirty two with a young and growing family. When her daughters were eleven and nine respectively she writes of them as follows:- ....."Fanny promises to be a fine showy well-looking woman and Maryann a delicate pretty, gently little body - thank God they both promise to be good girls and they at present are everything a mother can wish or expect children to be".... She writes affectionately, almost effusively, addressing her young brother as "by beloved Robert". Her letters give the impression that she was a friendly, vivacious and sociable person but one with a decided mind of her own. In spite of her husband's politics she undoubtedly considered herself to be Irish and in a letter of 1797 wrote ...."I am very much attached to my own Country and would never wish to leave it"....

During the Napoleonic wars, Sir William sent Hester and the children from Dublin to Bangor, Wales where they stayed for an extended period until any danger of a French invasion of Ireland had passed.
