According to James William Middleton Berry, 1848, this John Berry, who was disinherited for marrying
Miss Sweetman, a Catholic, was father of Thomas Berry. However, Lorton Wilson
indicates that he was the brother of Thomas.

Thomas was a landowner in the
Parish of Killucan.,Co. Westmeath, Ireland. He is the first family member for
whom I have documentary evidence. According to family legend he was descended from John
Berry of Middleton in Wales and the Berry family of Berrynarbor, Devon. There
is documentary evidence that the Berry family of Berrynarbor, owned
property in the 16th and 17th Centuries on the Gower Peninsular, South Wale, where
there was a place called ‘Middleton’.

Castletown-Kindalen, Co. Westmeath.
The claim of the Berrys to
descent from Oliver Cromwell has been disproved by Sir Edmund Bewley. In fact
the family was descended from Thomas Fleetwood of Kilbeggan Co. Westmeath,
who was a Royalist uncle of the Cromwellian General and Lord Deputy, Charles
Fleetwood.
