After Pentecost     Pentecost 5     Matthew 13:1-9 & 18-23, particularly verses 1-9

The Sower (YA No 57)

The Rabbi Jesus, told a tale

Of farming in their land.

A sower took some seed to sow;

He did his work by hand.

So, as he walked, grain fell around;

He threw it constantly.

It fell without design or plan;

He spread it gen’rously.

Some grain fell on the well-used  path;

The birds had much to eat.

What fell between the stones and rocks

Sprung up, but died from heat.

And some fell where the thistles grew;

It struggled to survive;

Competing for some space to grow,

It could not stay alive.

But when the seed fell on good soil

The harvest was untold.

It bore much fruit; the yield was great –

Up to a hundred-fold.

“If you have ears, then hear.” He said,

“Spread kindness lavishly.”

The harvest in God’s kingdom comes

In loving wastefully.
