Social Bookmarking

Here are tips that I have shared with throughout each lesson resource assignment feedback.

  • Purposes:
    • Apply social network tool for managing and sharing learning resources in distributed learning environments.
    • Why social bookmarking?
  • The more tags provide; more values added to the bookmarks; easier to be retrieved; building more effective online learning collaborative community.
  • Shared bookmark: Uncheck "Private" so you can share it with others, if preferred.
  • What types of resources are relevant and appropriate?
  • Social bookmarking is to support online collaborative learning community. It is valuable to search and view previous and current students' shared bookmarks on Delicious.
  • Provide a meaningful title: Frequently, when we apply DIigo to bookmark a web resource, the “Title” field doesn’t appear a meaningful title. It would be more useful if we could provide an appropriate for the web resource.
  • Description: It would be very valuable if we can provide useful descriptions for ourselves and/or our classmates to gain additional information before they click the bookmark.
  • It would be useful if we assign more tags to make our social bookmark organization easier. The more tags we provide; the easier for us to retrieve it in the future.
  • Important your browser bookmarks to Diigo: You can export your existing bookmarks on your browser to Diigo so you can access your bookmarks from any Internet-connected computers.
  • Do you know how to keep up with online resources, particularly our classmates’ and instructor’s online resources. They are growing every day. Generally, I bookmark at least 10 online resources every day. Here is a tip for you. Subscribe RSS on this URL: http://delicious.com/tag/etc677. Use and add Google Reader (RSS Reader) to your iGoogle to monitor what’s new added to our course online resources. You will be amazed by how rich they are.
  • What tags should I use for my bookmark besides the required tags?
  • Tags are very important in social bookmarking. Without appropriate tags, we couldn’t find our bookmarks, particularly when the numbers of our bookmarks are increasing. Two types of tag we could use: Public tags and Personal tags. The purposes of public tags are to share your bookmarks with the community. For example, our required tags, ETC545 and Lesson4 are public tags because anyone searches these tags and then locate your bookmarks. What other public tags can I use? It could be your school names, such as NAU. The purposes of private tags are for your own search and use. If you are doing assignments or projects, you can use tag like “Capstone Project,” “Final Project” etc. When you are working your projects or assignment, you can search your own tags. For example, you archive important peer-reviewed journals on my Delicious so I use “ETC” “Peer-Reviewed” and “Journals” to tag my journal bookmarks. When I want to see a list of peer-reviewed journals, I visit this URL:
  • Social bookmarking should not be just limited our own bookmarks. Network with the people that have similar interests to yours would allow you to see more useful bookmarks.
