Q: What difficulties/Problems did Paul experience? How might the difficulties/problems that Paul faced affect his development and learning in the short and long term? (6 marks)
Difficulties that Paul experience
- Inattention -
- Dull mundane seat work.
- Difficulty in giving sustained efforts in class or activities that have little intrinsic rewards.
- Behavioral Dis-inhibition
- Impulsiveness / Poor anger management. (ref : Paul stormed off to the back of the room where he proceeded to hit the noticeboard) (inability to delay a response, in this case anger - poor self regulation)
- No instant rewards for the child to be motivate to participant in the lesson (ref: he had lost interest in the discussion and had deserted his group and started to wander around and bothering his classmates in other groups).
- Hyperactivity - Paul moves about the class. He is generally restless and inattentive.
Affecting Paul's development
- Academic Performance
- Short term: he cannot focus in the lesson and under-perform in his daily homework.
- Long term: he does not learn as much as other and under-perform in his exam.
- Motivational Difficulty
- Short term: motivation and morale start to diminish since there is no recognition for his effort.
- Long term: Dread to have lesson.
- Social relationships
- Short term:impairment of self-regulation.
- Long term: cannot blend into the society.
